Thank you for visiting our pages. Visit the 2001, 2002 and 2003 Guestbooks Class of '52! I wish I would have known about the site before the end of year 2000. I'm not even sure what mystical gravitational pull brought me to the site. Great job and many thanks for all your efforts Jose. I've gone through the whole sight. That sure took a lot of work and it continues to do so. Would love to hear from anyone from the 48-52 classes. For all of you younger guys, it was the classes of 48 through 52 that raised all the money for your gym, which we never got to see. We played basketball all winter long with the Brothers in the open yard where the gym was ultimately built. Played trumpet and fooled around with all the other brass instruments for four years. But most of all I got a great education that put me way ahead of my college classmates at Hofstra (Hempstead, LI). I visited the vacant building just before it was demolished and shed a few tears. Also got to visit a few of the ICB schools in Ireland. There does not appear to be too many of us listed from the late 40's to the late 50's. I hope it's just because the old-timers are not into the computer age yet. Best wishes to all of my fellow alumni. Terence McAdams <tmca123@aol.com> Bayshore, NY USA - Saturday, December 30, 2000 at 06:10:43 (EST) To all my fellow alumni it is good to know that the spirit of "The Academy" is alive and strong going into the new millenium. Can you beleive that it will be twenty years since we walked up the stairs of St. Paul's to get our diplomas? Hoping we can somehow get in touch to celebrate. Spread the word. PEACE & LOVE Maurice '81 Maurice T. Zuniga <ems911evaluationunit@aol.com> Old Bridge, NJ USA - Friday, December 29, 2000 at 11:56:32 (EST) Merry Christmas and a healthy holiday season to all. I was just reading a few of the notes in the guest book and laughed at the comment about a brother hanging someone out the window. Does anyone go back to '63 and a lay teacher by the name of Piva? He had this habit of using his college ring on the heads of 'mischievious' youngsters. He also found a way to get people to stand in the corner of the room with their nose in that corner where the two walls come together. It's funny what thoughts come to mind. I remember Brother McLoughlin in detention/jug warning us not to turn around to see if he was there, because if he was... You get the idea. I didn't spend that much time in the cafeteria with Brother McLaughlin, but I did make some good friends (McGeary, where are you?), and will never forget the bright red cheeks on Brother McLaughlin's face. Ah, those were some very good years! Joe Maniaci <klakring@aol.com> Long Island, NY USA - Monday, December 25, 2000 at 21:00:13 (EST) Merry Christmas! Track rules! Alfred Fiorentino <BigAl1518@aol.com> Belle Harbor, Ny USA - Monday, December 25, 2000 at 17:25:41 (EST) Happy Holidays to all my fellow Panthers of PMA.....there is strength in our unity..as we each individually have accomplished our goals imagine what it would be like to put all our energies together..imagine what we can accomplish..Rick Neff..I am sorry I don't remember you but Steve Richardson was the guy on the bball team..I never had Bro Sheriden.I used to avoid him as he scared the crap out of me..didn't spend too much time in jug although I do remember a few times for not shaving..Mr Reagan, Mr Daniels to name a few..don't really recall my Spanish teacher's name..but I do remember he did not play..he only spoke in Spanish in class..I do remember Bro Levy hanging a guy out the 6th fl. window for not having his homework..he hit the same guy in the head with a small hammer. How could you not learn in that environment you were too scared not to..but I am really happy there are you folks out there who are truly connected to how we all spent 4 yrs of our lives in place that prepared us for who we are today..a tribute and a thanks go out to our teacher's and our parents...Rick got any memories to help jar mine... Lynn Bratchett <lbrat@earthlink.net> Oakland, Ca USA - Sunday, December 24, 2000 at 23:00:29 (EST) Merry Christmas to all and a Happy Healthy New Year !!!! Times have changed and we learn to adapt to the times but we must never forget our past and Power was such a big part of all our lives.I read all the quotes and it is wonderfull to see how many lives were shapped by our time at the old school. We must never forget and always keep alive the memories of our past ! enjoy my friends Vinny Bonomi <Vinnyts33@aol> Staten Island , NY USA - Saturday, December 23, 2000 at 22:25:16 (EST) I don't know why it to me so long to simply search the phrase 'Power Memorial Academy', but today I did. Like most of us, those years at Power were among the very best of my life. I was just a 13 yr old, commuting an hour each day when I first met Jim Secreto, Kevin 'Rock' Groody, Brian Coyle, Danny Santino, Chris Suarez, Ken Wright, Rob Pagliaro, Jim O'Brien, Wesley Masters, John 'Wildman' Gennosa, Tom Bianco, Anthony Bez, Jim Burke, Br.Sheridan (gentlemen, this is a cane-sword), Br.Costa (gentlemen, this is a good friend of mine, Kelly Everts), Br.Bechner (hold out your hand, Mr.Bree), Br.Haynes, Br.Colasuanno, Br.Fragala, Br.Sirignano, Br.Hurley, Br.Doughty Mr.Regan, Mr.Malone, Mr.Morra,& Mr.Cooney. My eyes were opened to the world in so many ways in those few years. Those of us who were lucky enough to attend Power came to realize that it it was a far different school than any other Catholic High, perhaps closer to home, in our own boroughs. At Power we met the rest of The City, & learned lessons not in the curriculum. Many have expressed sadness at Its closing, as anyone, anywhere might mourn the loss of a part of their past. But I'd like to point out something that makes Power's closing even more regrettable. As an 8th grader, I was accepted into the 4 schools I had selected at the time of the co-op exam. I knew nothing of benefits of attending Power. It was the $600 annual tuition that put me on the D train every morning for the next 4 years. Power was affordable for practically everyone. Working families who wanted better for their sons paid the $60 each month, & we received something priceless in return. A dedicated faculty & a diverse student body located in the heart of New York City combined to form what we, as alumni, understand so well, but struggle to explain. We can only say that it is now gone and New York has grown both richer & poorer. A great looking site, well done Jose and hope you keep up the good work. This has sure brought back memories for me and a pleasure to sign in. Had alot of fun on the track team under Bro's Binkley & Bielen, hope they are doing well. Wanted to try out for the basketball team, but after Mr. Malone said he was looking for those who could hit 25 ft jump shots & I knew that wasn't me. What ever happened to Bro. Levy?? I still see stars from the day he landed a right hook on me when I smiled & told him I forgot my bible book during class. I never forgot that book again. You all take care and Purple/Gold lives on. John Hack <sarge146@hotmail.com> Largo, FL USA - Sunday, December 17, 2000 at 05:04:20 (EST) How many of us remember running from Columbus Circle to get to 161 W61st St to get in that building without detention? I guess that discipline really had some positive results-I've never missed a flight for work and I am 53!Two years ago I dropped my son off to take an entrance exam for LaGuardia High School which is only blocks from the PMA site and I took a walk over to that corner. I wondered then whatever happened to some of the great people who attended Power and taught there. It is great to see so many of the names that I heard everyday in home room and also great to see that those who attended before and after still have a yearning to connect. When you read the guestbook ,you would never think that these messages were written by people who attended a NYC school. Overall, detention and all- we were lucky to have had the experience. p.s. we ended up sending my son to Iona-can't get away from those Christian Bros. He always smiled when he talked about Power's band, baseball and track teams. He said it was one of the best high schools in academics too. If he was a live today, I'd know he would work towards reopening the school. I'll pray that you can do it. But I think with the right team of classmates, Power Memorial will be reopened. Dan Wilson <HappilyRetired@prodigy.net> Cape May, NJ USA - Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 14:54:10 (EST) Hi, I feel like I just came out of "the closet." I hope I didn't offend anyone with my last guest book comments about me being a disabled Vietnam Veteran with PTSD. I'm not sorry I wrote them and I'm especially not sorry for serving in the U.S. Marines. No matter how bad I feel, no one can take away two great honors I earned. (Being called a Power Memorial Academy Graduate and serving in the Combined Action Program. I still strongly feel, we can reopen Power Memorial with some dedicated ClassMen. (I say ClassMen instead of classmates for a reason.) In the Marine Corps we had a saying, "We can do the hard things with no problem... It's the impossible things that we might need some time to do." Thank You Jack Cunningham Jack Cunningham <ProudVietnamVeteran@prodigy.net > Sussex , NJ USA - Wednesday, December 13, 2000 at 14:57:14 (EST) Hi Fellow Power-ClassMen, I write as a hobby to keep busy. I'm disabled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder due to my living conditions in a Vietnamese peasant-farming village a year after my graduation from Power. I served in a special Marine/Navy unit in Vietnam. Few Americans have ever heard of the Combined Action Program (CAP). The team of about 9 Americans lived with and protected the people from Communists. It got pretty ugly at times. Of the 5,000 Americans, who served in this unit over its six years of existence, only half of us survived the combat. Seventy percent of the survivors had at least one Purple Heart; forty-five percent had two or more Purple Hearts. (Some guys don't count their Purple Hearts, so these percentages may be even higher.) I'm nolonger ashamed of my PTSD. Finally, after 30 years, I'm not going to hide the fact. It was a result of serving in an ugly war that few Americans believed in. I went on to work at Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield for 22 years. The last job position that I held was the Data Processing Project Manager of their corporate Subscriber System. I wrote you guys all this because I want you to understand my motivations. I have the same motivations as the REST of you guys. But I might not be able to put as much time into this project as I would like. I'm inviting you guys to help me write a book about Power Memorial. All profits going to a fund that will be used to reopen Power Memorial and help support Boys Town of Italy. Reopen Power Memroial: (TUITION BASED ON schalorship grant need.(maybe a little sports, band, etc.) We can work on everything once we get enough volunteers. If the book is good, we'll make a movie script and follow the same benefits. You brave souls can work on the television series. No donation money up front unless we get volunteers for the business side of this Labor of Love. I volunnteer to be secretary for the first year to get this started. LETS GO POWER Jack C. Jack Cunningham <PowerMemorial1969@prodigy.net> Sussex, NJ USA - Friday, December 08, 2000 at 18:36:07 (EST) Rich Cairns is correct. "Loyalty and fealty" are the correct words to the song. I remember going to Radio City Music Hall to record the PMA record, songs included "March With the Irish" and "Parade With the Irish", both by former band director Mr. Al Cassidy or was it Cassedy?. I'm not sure what year that was. Remember when we marched up Fifth Avenue on St. Patrick's Day. The "award" winning PMA marching band won the "Best Marching Band" two of the four years. Any body else remember the parade of 1960 when it was cold and rainy. I remember having to pry my fingers from my clarinet. All the woodwinds were carried in the marching position in plastic bags. Only the drums and brass actually played. John H. Ihle <ambrose@machlink.com> Muscatine, IA USA - Monday, December 04, 2000 at 00:44:51 (EST) To the class of '64-I recently received e-mails from Ed Scott and John Gallagher. Ed's in Illinois and John is in Florida where he owns a funeral parlor(he sold 2 in NY). I remember teasing John as he worked for a funeral parlor when we were at Power. Does anyone remember the graduation party at John's where we were all pretty well fortified? His house in Bayside was next to a police lieutenant's house so the noise and stuff was overlooked. I also remember that there was a problem with some locals dropping by without an invitation. There are around 35 '64ers on www.classmates.com but you can't e-mail them unless you pay the annual fee of $25. You can, however, read some of the guys "bios" if they posted them. See you soon. We must have been in a class together. I sometimes messed around with Richardson (first name escapes me at the moment) who played on the basketball team. I use to call him Mr. "Snaps" but can't remember why. Just wanted to touch base with a fellow classmate and let you know there are many of us still around. Did you have Bro. Sheridan in Spanish? Talty; Mr. Burns ("Turn the page for knowledge, for college"); Pecky, Beany and Dwight (did those guys make it to graduation?); Coach Jim Razor ("It's like Nedick's, always good!"); Coach Kevin Riley (did he ever calm down?); Mr. Mulligan; (By the way, I get a kick out of pointing to Knicks' Asst. Coach Brendan Malone on TV and telling my kids I had him for gym!!); Rice High's Dean the Dream Memminger dunking on Ed Klimkowski at a game at St. John's (and Eddie getting up limping pretending he was fouled!);Kevin Walsh, Bobby Bendik, Eugene Manna; Bill Galbavy; Gary Madison; Tommy McKenna; Danny McCurdy; Rigoberto de Armas ("Whoever threw that espitbol, I tell you right on your face, you are a rat!"); Bro. Binkley with that strap of his tucked into the sash on his robe (I remember he unloaded all of his 300 lbs with a "windmill" lash on Joe O'Boyle outstretched hand (Binkley even raised Joe's hand to get a cleaner shot, but Joe sucked it up and refused to cry!); Rich Coppolino, who made chemistry such a gas (Yes, Rich, it was the Stones concert in 1969!!) I could go on, but let's hear from you guys. Besides, I'm afraid I might make a "blantant" spelling error. Contact me, particularly if you know how to get in touch with some of our friends. Pete Markey <peter.markey@att.net> Huntington, NY USA - Tuesday, September 26, 2000 at 08:36:29 (EDT) I guess I'm getting old- or is it because my oldest daughter just started High School (Kellenberg Memorial) but I have been thinking about my days at Power alot lately. Just as a whim I thought I would try to find something on the web that might be associated with our school. How happy was I to see a web site devoted to keeping the memory of Power Memorial Academy alive! I am also glad to see that we have reunions. I am hoping to see a big turnout at the October reunion from the class of 1974. I would love to hear from you guys - keep in touch. Michael O'Reilly <FIVEOR5@AOL.COM> Rockville Centre, NY USA - Friday, September 22, 2000 at 23:30:18 (EDT) I was totally stunned when my "search" yielded the PMA website. I frequently reminisce about Power, and wonder "what happened to...?" I was deeply saddened, however, to read of the passing of Tony Dudick, valedictorian of the Class of '65. Although I never had contact with him after graduation, I remember him as a brilliant student and a genuinely great guy. In May '65, when hordes of reporters hurried to write their stories about Lew Alcindor's decision to attend UCLA, Dick Schaap, then a Herald Tribune reporter, penned a column entitled, "Big Man at Power High." The "big man" he wrote about, however, was an aspiring mathematician who would be attending Manhattan College, Tony Dudick. Amidst my Power memorabilia, I still have a copy of that column autographed by Tony. On a less somber note, in 1989 I attended open school night at the Hicksville Middle School. I was astounded to find that my son's English teacher was none other than Mr.(no longer Brother) Hendrickson. He still smokes like crazy! Wonderful school, teachers, coaches and some interesting friends. Played basketball for Coaches Percudani, Kuhnert and Donohue. Charlie Ferrugia was probably (inch for inch) the finest player I had ever seen. Of course Lou (Kareem) turned out to be a pretty fair competitor (!) as well. Heard from Brother D'Adamo and Joe Straining today. These two PMA sites have some great e-mail addresses, and nostalgic photos. I will attempt to add a few tonight taken from a newspaper article and the '63 yearbook. Great Job, keep it up. By the by, the 1963-64 PMA Team is being inducted into the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame on September 21st over at the New York Athletic Club on Central Park South (not far from 61st and Amsterdam!). Kenney <akenney@lehman.com> New York City, NY USA - Wednesday, August 02, 2000 at 11:32:42 (EDT) What a goof it is to see all the names, the purple and gold and that great school seal. It takes me back to standing outside the gym in our "cool" raincoats and skinny ties waiting for class to begin. Most of us had "Detroit" haircuts and would do anything to stay out of "Jug". I was in that cafeteria after school more than I care to admit. Watching for the Dean in the mirrors of the candy machine..if you moved, another hour. Man, has it been thirty six years since we graduated? I miss everyone. My Power Memorial schools years are among the happiest of my memories. Does anyone know where our school records are being kept, if at all? If they have been destroyed, then I guess I can claim to my kids I was an "A" student all four years!
