Hello alumni and teachers of PMA...I am here to tell you that your school was known all over the United States. I went to school in Columbus, Indiana, but wouldn't have been great to have been one of "you"? I ask anyone who would have an item signed by Lew Alcindor...a hallway pass, a card, a yearbook...anyone at all...to please email me if they would be willing to sell it. Lew was my idol. I have followed his career ever since 1965. I just want an item signed by him...and some shots of him in his Power Memorial uniform. Please, if you can help me, email me at bulldog2429@voyager.net. I would very much appreciate anything you can do on this... Happy New Year alumni of PMA...your school lives on.

Dear Power brothers: I want to wish the Power family a very peaceful and blessed Christmas season. We as a nation have suffered greatly and we have lost some brave and heroic fellow grads due to the 9-11 attacks. Let us remember them always and pay homage to them by being exceptional citizens. A special place in my heart exists for them and my class of '71. God bless America.

Hello to all! Reaching back at trying times, it seems, is a popular home remedy. Had the good fortune to run into Mr. Coppolino, John Redgrave (1973) and Ed Jennings (1974). Unfortunately it was at the funeral for Lt. Joe Leavey (1973), who lost his life 9/11/01 doing what he truly loved, in a building he always admired (WTC). Ceremony was truly celebration of life. Joe, your family was so gracious and strong; I know you are proud. Hope to see many of my PMA brothers at the next reunion. Kudos to Mr. Copp!

Hi. If any Power grads are interested in Titanic, I have a new book out called In Search of Great Uncle Pat: Titanic Survivor. It's about my great uncle who survived the sinking. It's available at www.publishamerica.com and you can also check it out at my homepage at hometown.aol.com/jrnolan. I am also a radio announcer on WHUD 100.7 FM. You can also find me at www.whud.com. Hello fellow Panthers. Just wanted to add my condolences to the families and friends of our fallen brothers at the WTC. Billy Lake lived a couple of blocks away from me in Brooklyn and we were in the same grade. Although we didn't exactly hang out in the same circle of friends, I can say that I remember him as a fierce competitor. We played opposite each other on everything from Knute Rockne football teams to games of "Kings" on the sidewalk. RIP, Bill.

Just now watching the Power Memorial special on MetroTV. Wonderful program, great interviews and even better memories of a special school at a special time. I had never played against anyone with Kareem's size and ability before (or since), but the players that surrounded him were special as well. Arthur Kenney, Dan Nee, Charlie Farrugia, Paul Houghton, Bobby Grundstrom, Norwood Todman, Eric Brown ... Wonderful years and memories. I'm glad this site is here for all to see the pride people still have for Power Memorial

I just spoke to my brother Mike, PMA 1956, and learned of this website. I was just in NYC last week and viewed the horror of the WTC. God bless all that perished, with speciall thoughts for the brother alumni. As I usually do when I am in NYC, I walked to 61st and Amsterdam, and found a little sanity thinking of my time at PMA, and the spiced ham heros we bought at the deli on Amsterdam. As I remember the fellow who ran this deli at one time ran the lunch room concession at PMA.

Thanks to all who attended the reunion. Nearly 200 alumni attended. We were able to raise $1000 to donate to the Fireman's Fund in honor of Joseph Vosilla '77- injured in the Father's Day fire in Astoria. In addition, over $2,000 was collected at the reunion to donate in memory of the PMA alumni who perished on September 11th, and added to the proceeds of the night, we are able to make a donation of $3,260 thus far. Any additional donations can be sent to me to add to this total. It would be great if we could reach $5,000 so that we could donate $1,000 each in honor of the five deceased alumni. William Harry Thompson '68, court officer is the fifth dedicated Power alumnus that gave his life to help others that day.

Many alumni have suggested that we make a donation in honor of the three alumni firefighters who perished at WTC. As you know, we are making a donation to the fireman's fund in honor of Joseph Vosilla for the firefighter's families who died in the Astoria blaze. As a separate gesture, we will sell PMA hats with an American flag on the side for $20 each, and take up a special collection the night of the reunion. All proceeds after covering expenses will go toward a donation directly to the memorial funds of the three firehouses with whom Joe Leavey, Larry Virgilio and Billy Lake were associated. If anyone who is not able to attend the reunion wishes to contribute, please contact me.

Its not about fancy cars, big houses and who has the most $.Its about loving someone, having a home and not a house, its about what PMA teachers and brothers taught us. The wonderful thing was that NYC was jammed with people, and those people were as reverent as could be,but just as shocked as could be too. The great part is that you could feel the unity. We passed several Fire houses, and they are just the most sad places to see. In trying to find something positive in all this overwhelmingly saddness, it can be said we all are drawn closer than we have in a generation. It is with a certain amount of pride and expectation that as a Power Grad you knew we would have HERO's and indeed our comrades of the past lived up to the PMA credo we all are so proud of.....God Bless Them, Rest In Peace, God Bless the USA. THANK YOU HERO's.

I am sorry to add a third PMA name to the list of the missing at WTC, William Lake. Many have e-mailed me regarding the upcoming reunion - IT IS STILL ON! Alumni have asked about making a contribution to one of the charities in honor of the deceased and missing PMA alumni. We can certainly do that, and keep it separate from the contribution that we are making to the Firmen's Children Fund in honor of Joe Vosilla. We can take up a special collection at the reunion, and if you are unabke to make the reunion, you can send a contribution earmarked for this tragedy. Regards to all! Rich Coppolino

Power Brothers: I humbly vow in honor of all those heroes who gave their lives rescuing others on Sept 11th. Those who died serving others constitute a living sacrifice worthy of heavenly acceptance and God's eternal love. The Power school spirit was demonstrated by Lt.Joseph G. Leavey and Larry Virgilio, two who now grace the halls of heaven. I have no words to express my deepest sympathy to their loved ones; not even my tears are suffice to begin easing their pain. If this message is able to reach their families, please tell them that we are forever indebted to them, and that we are so proud of Joseph and Larry. May they be rejoicing in the presence of the Lord!

I also think that the Brothers who were killed in the line of duty fell as the first casulties in this new war and should be included in the list of those who gave their lives for their country. As a Viet Nam vet, I would like to see their names added to the list. John Dunham class of 64. Viet Nam December 1966 to December 1967.

I was working in 6 WTC, U. S. Customs House, morning of Sept. 11th. First thought was our building was hit. It was a repeat of 1993 only instantly I knew the loss was going to be much greater. As I ran for safety, I saw the Firemen, Policemen, EMT, guards, etc., all rushing in as we rushed out. It was clear that they were special people. I now realize that those heros, although many of a younger generation, were what schools like PMA made us into. Good Americans. A sense of duty with sound hearts and minds and strong sense of right and wrong and most off all, the will to help others. I know PMA built upon what its Alumni heros learned from their families. To be Good Americans ready to help.

I would like to thank all those who participated in the Power school reunion held on August 25th in Ft.Lauderdale. The school spirit demonstrated by all was outstanding and the fellowship exhibited proved once again that we are indeed fortunate to have graduated from Power Memorial Academy. Graduates from different classes ranging from 1948 to 1977 shared their memories and best "war" stories to the delight of all. Thank you, Mr.Richard Coppolino, for giving us valuable insight regarding the last days of our school. You brought back many memories when you told us about our past teachers and classmates. Hi, and greetings to all Power Memorial 1968 graduates and former friends. This is a well-constructed web-site. I haven't touched HTML yet but my Tech experience is leaning me in this direction. I have a need; does anyone have a copy of the 1967 Yearbook? I was in the Photography club that year and did very good sports photography, etc.; some photographs were put in that yearbook; however, my original photographs and negatives were never returned to me and I was quite upset at the time, upset enough not to buy the yearbook; now I want it! I took the photograph(s) of a bowler at the old bowling alley above the Woolworth's Store at 8th Avenue between 57th and 58th Streets (long gone along with the Woolworth's store), and a photograph of a basketball player in the Power Gym, taken above the hoop. All shots were with a Nikon F & Flash. If anyone has a spare yearbook, better yet, information on where my original photographs and negatives are, please contact me. Messages to Brian Dooley, James Hennebury, Patrick Phelan, are you out there? Let me know how you are!

I am astounded to see so many brilliant comments about Power School. I myself went to a special school, perhaps very similar to your own school in the 1960s. My school was Jefferson Military College (founded by Thomas Jefferson) in 1802 in Natchez Mississippi. (Don't bother to look for it on the Internet, as nothing exists.) I am saddened to see that our Honor Roll has grown, yet happy to know that other Powermen remembered them and made an effort to make sure that their names are not forgotten. I am sure that they are not the only one's who died in the service of their country. Viet Nam was not the only war that Powermen participated in. There is also Korea and World War II. Although all of our fallen classmates may not be on the list, we can still remember that they gave their lives in the service of our country and hopefully, one day, we may know their names. It is great to see this site. i am married, boy 3yr. girl 13yrs. graduated from the college of aeronautics with an aircraft maintenance degree. currently disabled due to a work related injury. retrained myself as an a+ certifried computer technician. power was a great school that taught us values, morals, and respect. i still remember brother boyle saying mr. alameda my freind. of course that meant jug, and i became the gum scraping king of the school. a title i hold to this day. man i miss those times. i still visit the old hood and to see the skyscrapers in powers place makes me feel sad. to all the faculty that had a part in molding me into the man i am today. god bless you. and for those who are no longer with us, i know you are up there with the main man. anybody remember me write back. i was mr. cool with the green pants and purple shirts. my daughter cannot beleive the way i looked. take care everyone.

I guess once a person reaches middle age nostalgia sets in.. I must admit that I have very fond memories of PMA and the fellows and teachers that became a part of my life. Truly sorry to learn the school had closed and the passing of so many teachers. Now is the time for me to ask forgiveness for all the abuse and disrespect we showed some of our dedicated professors, we were just punks! But still I thank God I remember so many good times among my classmates and teachers. There will never be another Power and I cherish fine memories of that school every day of my life. Anyone can feel free to contact me, once a Power man, always a Power man!! Fernando Hernandez

I left Power after my Sophmore year (1973) because we moved out to Long Island. Funny thing was on the last day of school in '73 I went in to collect my report card and had to leave my classroom to get the report card. Found out why. I had failed math and had to go to summer school. In the ensuing time that day I was unable to get back to my class and say goodbye to my friends. The upside was that since I was moving and attending a public HS on Long Island, no summer school! Downside was I never got to really say so long. So to those who remember me at Power Class of '75, sorry I never got to say so long. Best part about going to Power was the people I met there and laughed alot with.

I am currently working for an internet company in New York. My wife and I are also working on creating a large family. Wish me luck! /Asif

I just spent about two hours on this site and it was well worth my time. (Thanks Jose) Would love to hear from more of my 1961 classmates. I lived in Astoria L.I. when I attended Power. It was sad to hear the news about those NY firemen perishing in the blaze on Father's Day. Worse yet, I hear one of them graduated from Power. Let's remember them in our prayers! Any more Power graduates living in the Tampa Bay area???

In The previous post I forgot to say I am from the Class of 1952. I retired from IBM after 29 years in the Research Division in Yorktown Heights, New York. When my brothers and I left home at 7:15 am to get tp school by 9:00 am, we used to think our parents were crazy. It turns out they were pretty smart people. The bus from Queens Village used to have at least 10 other students going to PMA.

As some of you know, my daughter, Amanda, plays on an 11 and Under AAU Girls Basketball team called the Westchester Hawks. Last Sunday the team won the AAU Metropolitan Association Championship in their 11:U division and qualify to compete in the AAU National Championships, July 6-14 in Kenner, LA (a New Orleans suburb). I was wondering if any organization, government entity, corporation, etc. might be willing to help underwrite the cost of sending the team to Louisiana. I would appreciate any suggestions as to whom I might contact in this regard. Thanks. Rich Cairns P.S. Until more alumni sign up for the PMA Discussion Board (click on Discussion -this site) and the PMA Email group on Yahoo, re-signing this Guest Book is the only way to reach you. Right now there's only a handful of us signed up and we're looking for more.

Coach Richard Percudani, Class of "53 and assistant coach of The 1963-'64 #1 High School Team Of The Century, passed away on May 1, 2001, and was buried in Greenfield Hills, CT on Saturday May 5th. " 'Perc' fought a courageous battle over the last few months, but he did not fight it alone. Our family would like to extend sincere thanks to family and friends who supported and assisted him in his final journey. Your love and care sustained him. We were truly blessed to have him in our lives. Anyone who met him was easily taken in by his charismatic personality. Behind the easy smile was a man of compassion, integrity, sincerity, loyalty, and love. He was the complete package. And in the end, he left us with a picture of strenght, courage and faith. He was an all-star in the game of life." Thank you, Amelia, Louisa, Carol, Richard and Carmen, Stephen, Paul and Alexander

I'm really very devastated to hear of Dick Percudani's passing. He was from the class of '53 and a basketball star. I was from the class of '52 and was very close to him. He lived a short distance from my home in Elmhurst and we used to go to the same park and shoot baskets together or get involved in other sports. Dick was one of the most gentle and sincerest people I have ever known and I was hoping to rekindle our acquaintance at one of the reunions. Not meant to be. In response to joe maniaci concerning bruno kirby. bruno kirby grew up on the west side 51st street just east of 10 avenue. He went to sacred heart school, an elementary school where the irish christian brothers taught, so my guess is he most likely went to power memorial. Dan Mcann said in his response that he graduated in 1967 that's probably corredt because I graduated in 1961 and I was about 5 or 6 years older than he was. By the way in those days we called him scooter. Also some tid bit of information. Leslie Cauci, also a graduate of Powe class 1961, while he was in high school sang with a group called the Del Satins, they did all the backgrounds for Dion after he went on his own songs like" RUN AROUND SUE, DONNA THE PRIMA DONNA AND OTHERS". After the Del Satins he began singing with the newly formed Brooklyn Bridge and he still sings with them today. So if anyone gets a chance to see the Brooklynbridge perform remember a POWER Alumni is there. Just found this web page it's great. thanks to everyone involved. Eddie POWER 61'

To Lynn Bratchett. Sorry I've been away for so long. You and Neff are being back some good memories. Jacques Alexandre was a funny guy. Roger Sexton was a cool guy who lived in Wash. Heights. He grew up with some people who went to PMA with my brother. The guy you are thinking of who lived in the Amsterdam Houses was Edgar deLeon. Edgar is a lawyer now and I think he is practicing with Richard Zayas here in Manhattan. Remember Ted Henderson? I ran into him on Broadway a few months ago. He still looks the same. Still haven't heard from Earl Seeley. I'm going to drop him another letter.

To Calvin Richardson. Like Lynn Bratchett, I played against Steve in CYO Ball. Lynn, Earl Seeley and I went to St. Marks. Steve, James "Black Jack" Jackson, Nova were at St. Cecilia's. I'll never forget playing in that gym on the top floor of the school. There was a pad at the far end of the court tied to a door. We were told if you took a lay up and ran into the pad, you would fall to the street below because the door behind the padding wasn't locked. I don't know if it was true, but I didn't take a lay up all that game. Some home court advantage. I'm sorry to hear about Steve passing. I had not seen him since the early 80's when we ran into one another in MSG at a Stevie Wonder concert. He was a great ball player and just as good a person.

Hi, A couple of months ago, I invited everyone to help me reopen Power Memorial. When we all went to Power, the school had a great spirit. After reading these guestbook remarks, it seems to me, many of us still carry that same "can do" spirit. It would be nice if some kids of today in New York City had a school like Power to hold on to. Things I believe in, I never give up on. Please visit the below web site that I'm building that also highlights this spirit. www.CapVeterans.com It's a spirit that Power laid a good foundation for me. I would have graduated in 1972, except my parents took "early retirement" and we moved to Ireland. I hope this site keeps growing. Does anyone know what ever bacame of Mr. Cooney who I had for math both years?

Hi, I grew up in New York City on 60th and Amsterdam Avenue and I remember Power well. Sad that it's not there anymore. My whole family were big Power sports team supporters back then. We all moved out of the neighbourhood around 1961, so lost touch with Power. Glad to see this website exists. I've put a link to it on my family history website so that all my family can take a trip down Memory Lane. All the best

Great website!! Hello to all fellow PMA graduates, I am part of the 1974 class. I have great memories of Power and grew to appreciate it even more after graduation when I repeatedly found that it was a first rate education from an academic and personal perspective. We had great teachers; dedicated, capable and caring. Although their methods would not be allowed in today’s world it was a very effective way of reaching young men. I am glad and better for having lived it. I will visit this frequently. Great job and thanks for reviving the memories.

Lynn-No I'm not the Director of Photography although I do like to take pictures-Relocated to Indy from NY in 1984-helped establish a branch office in Indy for Dean Witter as an operations manager-Left that side of the securities industry in 1992 and am now working hard at putting crooks away-I work for the Indiana Secretary of State's office as an investigator-I go after bad stock brokers and scam artists-You would think a kid from Washington Heights, just north from your old neck of the woods up by the George Washington bridge, would be running the scams but I guess like you said, many of us come to a fork in the road and I truly believe Power pushed me in the right direction. Always glad to hear from ya!!! Anyone else from the class of 73 who would like to add their 2 cents-students, teachers?

Still here Mr. Bratchett, just waiting for some fellow 73 grads to appear. Kind of weird that I mentioned Steve in my first note and then we come to find out that he has passed on-very sad. Never did ask you what are you doing in CA-long way away from NYC.-Anyone know what came of Bro. Jensen-Have had conflicting stories-one stated he died from kidney failure, another states he is teaching in Jersey. When thinking about Power, I believe my memories could not be expressed any better then Will Bree stated in his posting on December 19. I still believe we received a better education at Power then most college grads enjoy today (that is once you buckled down or were whacked by Bro. Binkley or Jenson, whichever came first).

So, Martin Davis, Milton Chiarelli, Noel Rodriguez, Eddie Colon...Where are you? Nice job on this web site by the way...Too bad, there's no site for St.Paul's!

Hello All, It's good to see that there are alot of alums who feel the same way about PMA as I do. It's interesting to hear some of the reactions of people when I tell them I went to Power. Usually it's either: "great sports school"; "tough school" (I take this to mean tough guy tough as opposed to academically, but maybe people who react this way didn't do too well on the "co-op"); or, "Didn't Lew Alcindor go there?". Either way, I'm proud to have gone to Power. Take it easy. George Cannon '75

Greeting fellow Panthers and Class of '75. Well done Jose & Chris, the site brings back great memories. I especially recall: CREAMING Rice High School in basketball, the boat rides to Rye Beach, Br. Sheridan's jokes and so much more. I made life-long frienships there and learned valuable lessons. I look forward to the next reunion and sharing in that undying Purple & Gold spirit that the bulldozers couldn't raze.

Jose: Thank you for creating this site. Like many others who grew up in NYC, most of our milestone markers like schools we attended, and neighborhoods that we lived and worked in, have all but disappeared. The effect can be somewhat surealistic in making it seem that all those years might just be a fantasy. But what a fantasy it was! The four years spent at Power shaped my life in the most positive way. I never would have managed in the world without the powerfully positive influence of DETENTION! Thank you Bro. McLoughlin, wherever you are! And I truly appreciated Bro. Watkins' French classes, but regreted not having paid better attention. Who knew that 27 years later I would be living in a French speaking country for five years. My biggest regret in life is that my four children didn't have the opportunity to attend Power. I finally found the time to register with my class of 1971. It has been great to see PMA not forgotten. Thank you to Rich Coppolino for keeping in touch with me while I was in Washington DC and inviting me to all those reunions . Unfortuantely I have not been able to attend one yet but hopefully my I will attend my 30th that is coming up this year. I send regards of my brothers, Patrick, '74 and Mark '77. I will urge both of them to get with it and sign on with their classes. Yes, it would be great to see PMA open again in NYC. keep up the good work. .

Lynn B., that was probably me since I had a tendency to joke around alot in class. You have a great memory for names-I do remember the names of Phillip Penta, Kevin Finnegan and if I remember correctly Jacques was the guy with the shaved (or close to it) head. How about Hector Rodriguez, Eugene Gasparro, Paul Crespo or Rich Abreu-Did you take Karate after school? Free classes given by one of the students (very short but tough Spanish guy-Can't remember the name). I have the 1973 yearbook somewhere at home but have not been able to lay my hands on it yet. If I find it I'm going to bring it to a Pacer game and get Brendon Malone to sign it (Pacer assistant coach to Isiah Thomas). Lets hear from some of the other 73 grads out there!!!

I am glad to see that the Power spirit is still alive and well. I miss those days of Br. Dausch and Mr. Long. I still mention to my wife the temper of Mr. Long and how red in the face he could get. I am now living in CT and my wife Susan and I have three kids. I worry they will certainly not get the same great NY experiences that I did. Sorry I missed the last reunion. Had to travel. I have enjoyed reading the messages. I see we still have the spirit. My brother graduated in 1960. Name: John J. Gorman. He would like to contact another "60" grad, Jack Cunningham. Anyhone know where he is? I think it is a good idea to re-open PMA. There is certainly a need just as when the ICB's first started teaching kids way back when.

Hope all you PMA men (and families) had a happy holiday and can look forward to a healthy new year. Lynn Bratchett, I must remember you from class-I also had Reagan and Daniels. I guess I should be thankful I did not have Bro. Levy since I had a tendency to leave homework at home (or my dog ate it)!! Bro. Sheridan was intimidating but really a great guy once you understood the rules. Although he never hung us out a window, he did have his own head games for punishing those that ran afoul of his law-One was to have you stand in front of the classroom with him and try and race and beat him to the back of the class-As soon as you would take-off, he would grab a desk (and the person sitting in it) and fling it in front of you-Most of the time you would stop abruptly. Any other fond memories of corporal punishmen
