Thank you for visiting our pages. Visit the 2000 , 2001 and 2003 Guestbook entries. I can't surf a board but thank God that I can surf the web. What a great site. I remember and cherish my years at Power. It is unbelievable the hold that the school has on my soul and obviously for so many others. I too went and gathered a brick from the remains of the old school.God Bless all and every Power man. Happy New Year Mike Perrella <mlp45w60@aol.com> Wilton, Ct USA - December 31, 2002 at 19:03:52 Great to find this site thanks to my old friend and best man, Jim McCoy. God bless all of the PMA alumni, Happy New Year and let's get together for the 2003 reunion. John J. Jedlicka <jjj2@attbi.com> Atlanta, GA USA - December 31, 2002 at 12:17:37 St. Patrick's Day Parade Info: We have 123 Proud Power Marchers from all over the country and a few from overseas. Our most senior marcher is Robert Shearn, '35. Almost every graduating class from 1947 to 1985 is represented except for the following: '53, '63, '77, '78, '81, '82, and '84 - the last class to officially graduate. We can only accept 17 more marchers due to limits placed on us by the parade committee. The Purple and Gold Spirit is still alive. Have a Happy and Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Terry McAdams <powermemorial@aol.com> Bay Shore, NY USA - December 31, 2002 at 10:09:07 Would like to join in the parade up 5th Ave. Jim McCoy <chasejim@aol.com> New York, NY USA - December 30, 2002 at 21:21:33 This is my new e-mail address. Israel "Izzy" Sardo <izsardo@netzero.net> Bakersfield, CA USA - December 25, 2002 at 23:39:33 I would like to register to march in the St.Pat's parade with power this march Thomas Turner USA - December 25, 2002 at 17:53:46 Merry Christmas to all of my fellow alumni and teachers. Last night I logged onto this site to see who signed the guestbook, and I sat there looking at the picture of the school building and thought of those wonderful 4 years I spent there. This morning I went digging through some boxes and found a brick from the school after being torn down. A classmate of mine, Artie Olveson, gave it to me several years ago. He had taken a bunch of bricks from the rubble after the school was torn down. If any of you know the whereabouts of Artie, please have him email me. Again, Merry Christmas to all of you, and especially to you Mr Coppolino! Get well soon! Andrew "Chick" Pisani <chick174@bellatlantic.net> Union City, NJ USA - December 25, 2002 at 09:33:29 Sitting here on Christmas Eve, my thoughts turned to fond memories of Power. I decided to surf the Internet and found your great site. I am one of three brothers who graduated (Jim 65) (Tom 69) and Mike (76). Just want to wish everyone a very holy Christmas Season and special greetings to my class of '71. Fernando Hernandez <fernpa@hotmail.com> Miami, Fl USA - December 17, 2002 at 21:40:55 I wasn't aware we had over 100 already for the St. Pat's parade. I have made plans to fly in from Kansas just for it and would like to put my name on the list of those who will march. Hope there's room cause I'm coming back to NYC for the occasion. Thnaks and see you there. Ed Rafter <e.rafter@ieee.org> Overland Park, KS USA - December 16, 2002 at 21:36:16 new email address - don't use att any longer Pete Markey <buckeroo@optononline.net> Huntington, NY United States - December 11, 2002 at 15:54:43 This is a test of the guestbook. Jose B. Rivera <jose@powermemorialacademy.com> New York, NY USA - December 11, 2002 at 09:20:34 As of 11:30 PM December 10, 2002 we have 110 names on our list for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Approximately 6 wish to be "kept in the loop" but probably will not march. Hopefully they will join us at the terminus of the parade and we can celebrate the return of Power Memorial Academy to the big parade in NYC. We reached our goal of at least 100 volunteers, a respectable number. Yes, we are still accepting names so if you wish to march with the PMA Contingent please contact us with your name, graduation year, and e-mail address. We have a meeting with the NY Parade Committee on Wednesday, December 11. Thank you for your enthusiastic support. Terry McAdams <powermemorial@aol.com> New York, NY USA - December 10, 2002 at 23:33:33 GREAT SITE. The years melt away when browsing thru it. The days of Bro. Shea calling some hapless student "a bird". Or the class getting sleepier and sleepier as Bro Mac Partlan told us that we can come to the chapel on Sundays and read our Bibles. Then he casually added the renaming 4 hrs of the day will be spent shooting hoops in the gym and it was like we were suddenly shot with massive doses of andrelin and it seemed like half the freshman class showed up that first day of the Bro. Rice Club. Or the time Principal Synan anounced any senior caught in the bars after the St Patrick day Parade would be suspended. We asked our teacher, Mr. Considine, if he found us in a bar would he turn us in. He thought a minute and said "It depends on how many beers you buy me," all seem like yesterday. Your sites bettern'a wk with no detention. RICHARD G. POLLET <YANX@RCN.COM> WOODSIDE, NY USA - December 10, 2002 at 21:58:21 Please add my name to all future PMA reunions / events. I heard a rumor that some PMA grads were trying to get a group together and march in the 2003 St Paddys Day Parade . Sign me up , I'll be there . Are there any other PMA grads living here in Connecticut ????? John Schneider <JEGSCHNEIDER@aol.com> Stamford, CT USA - December 10, 2002 at 21:55:07 Richard, Thanks for the note on Mr. Coppolino. This man has done so much and will do much more for PMA. His e-mail addy is: rvcopp@msn.com for those who may not know. Steve Henits <zank@comcast.net> NJ USA - December 03, 2002 at 19:54:04 ATTENTION ALL PANTHERS! Mr. Coppolino has had cancer surgery and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. That's the extent of the information I have. Please send your best wishes either E-mail or in care of St. Francis Prep in Queens. It's the least we can do for the man that has kept all these reunions going. So do it! Don't make me come down there! Richard Hertz Darien,, CT USA - December 02, 2002 at 22:09:28 What a great site! I just found it and am glad to know there are so many of us out there. I would like to say that the class of 1984 was not the last class at Power. Several lost souls in the class of 1985 were the last to graduate. I was a junior when the school closed and about 20 of us opted to go to summer school at John Jay College where we completed the requirements for senior year. We graduated in August 1984 (with PMA diplomas) so I guess you could say we were the second class of 1984 or the class of 1985. Anyway, thanks for putting together the site and I would love to hear from any of the guys from 84 or 85. Tim McGuire <medlaw2k@cs.com> Seattle, WA USA - November 23, 2002 at 06:51:53 Please include me on your mailing list regarding PMA activities. I look forward to marching in the St. Pat's Parade. I believe our class,'56, won the marching prize in 1956. John M.O'Rourke <Johnroeor@webtv.net> Huntington , NY USA - November 22, 2002 at 11:24:30 Please include me on your mailing list regarding PMA activities. I look forward to marching in the St. Pat's Parade. I believe our class,'56, won the marching prize in 1956. John M.O"Rourke <Johnroeor@webtv.net> Huntington , NY USA - November 22, 2002 at 11:22:51 If anyone needs information from the 1966,67 & 68 yearbooks just let me know and I will scan it & send it. John Murphy <yfd42@comcast.net> Punta Gorda, Fl USA - November 22, 2002 at 10:46:59 88 Proud Marchers for St. Patrick's Day, and still counting...oh, if only they all had trombones! Terry McAdams <powermemorial@aol.com> Bayshore, NY USA - November 21, 2002 at 17:09:47 Fellow alumni, I am sorry to bear this news: Brother P. L. Lawrence has passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12th, 2002. He had suffered a stroke just prior to the October, 2002 PMA reunion. Father Jack Gibbons, class of '52 led the Interment prayers at the Brothers cemetery at West Park, New York. Vic Kaplan '52 <vickap13@optonline.net> Garden City Park, NY USA - November 20, 2002 at 13:24:24 Steve and Ed now bring up the total to 86 marchers but we only have 73 e-mail addresses. We sent out an update on Saturday so we do need e-mail addresses for the new recruits. At this rate we should go over the 100 mark within a few days. Lets push for 200 next! Terry McAdams <powermemorial@aol.com> NY, MY USA - November 18, 2002 at 07:22:28 I did a little work today and signed up these fellas for the Parade. Terry, add on Nick Borhi from 1968, Jules Apatini from 1968, Vic Skrapits, my 2nd cousin graduated, I think in '65, he will come otherwise his daughters house will not be constructed. Also Jules will contact Pete Nadler, he owns a restaurant on 75th and 2nd Ave., and Bro. D'Adamo, Nick Borhi mentioned to me that his brother Steve Borhi always mentions you as his favorite teacher - looks like Steve will come, Nick and I will make sure he does. I grew up with these boys, elementary and high school, and Joe Reinwald, I sent you an e-mail, another one from elementary and Power, if he would only read his e-mails - he would definitely come from North Carolina. If any grad from 1968 recalls Jules Apatini, his daughter who is 15 years old has song on The Regis Philbin Show (Cardinal Hayes alumnus) and for Major Guiliani and Gov. Pataki - what a great talent she is. Check out her site at lisaapatini.com for some wonderful singing and dancing. Steve Henits <zank@comcast.net> NJ USA - November 17, 2002 at 21:18:55 Thanks to Ed Beyer's recruitment efforts the class of '61 just jumped ahead of '52, '69, '70,, and '75 for the St. Paddy's Day Parade. I've run out of fingers and toes but I think that gets us very close to 80 marchers so far. Go Power! Terry McAdams <powermemorial@aol.com> Bay Shore, NY USA - November 17, 2002 at 21:10:26 I'm among that group of former Powermen ('61-63) that regrets moving, and graduating from another school. Enjoy staying in touch with former classmates and keeping up with the Power news. Played on the '63 Championship (JV)basketball team and have wonderful memories of school, people and the time. I'll be taking my grankids to the Thanksgiving Day parade and look forward to seeing the 'Purple and Gold' among the marchers. Would love to hear from Ed McGeary and Bob Doyle if anyone knows their where-abouts. Joe Maniaci <klakring@aol.com> Long Island, NY USA - November 17, 2002 at 17:45:01 Glad to see that our school really hasn't closed in the hearts of many of PMA Alumni. John Migliorino(Bro. David) <principal@notredamehighschool.> Cape Girardeau, MO USA - November 15, 2002 at 18:51:43 As of 11/15/02 - it looks like the old guys from '52 and the younger guys from '70 might surpass the classes of '69 and '75. Thanks to Fernando '71 has one gallant marcher. Our count now totals 72. And. we have one volunteer to check out the terminus area of the parade for the hot toddies. Terry McAdams <powermemorial@aol.com> Bay Shore, NY USA - November 15, 2002 at 15:27:46 wow i had no idea.great work. thanks to paul "kutz" aka "crash" kutzman for turning me on to this site. sorry to hear about tommy and billy burke they were true mutants and will be missed. will be difficult to get to reunions and parades [as best i can remember the last and only st. pats parade i attended we got locked in a bar on 83rd st which was no hardship at the time but then proceeded to get in a little altercation upon release from said bar it was all very foggy then so you can imagine what it looks like from here i don't think my fragile health could take another parade besides my wife just wouldn't understand]but if any of you PMA grads ever get to arkansas look me up and bring golf clubs[ my wife doesnt understand golf but seems to tolerate it for now. you can find me at various places around the country where i sell my drums check the website www. villagedrum .com would love to hear from any 67 grads especilly dennis yee i went to st.pauls k-5 till we moved from 58th st to the bronx in 1960 other PMA grads who were in my class at st pauls were thomas yankow and robert echeverria great to hear about br. d'adamo will email him for sure man i could go on all nite but gonna save some for later thanks again what a blast om shanti joe joe bender <joe@villagedrum.com> fayetteville, ar USA - November 13, 2002 at 19:55:30 Was at a Knights of Columbus meeting the other night and heard a brother speaking about "POWER" and he told me about this site. Sure glad it is here and will keep in touch. Will try to make the Parade. Wish all only the BEST. Christopher T. Spano <cochise327@aol.com> Brentwood, NY USA - November 13, 2002 at 16:00:56 Suggestion: Even though this web-site gets a lot of activity and the reunions are well attended, there are still many alumni who remain "unconnected". we can reach these gents through our own networks. Employer newsletters/web-sites, professional organizations, church bulletins, local K of C Councils, veterans orgs. are just some of the sources that come to mind. If we make the effort to get the information out to all the "strays" I'm sure the turn out will be more than we need! Just make sure to include contact info in anything you put out. Dan Diffley <diff6@aol.com> Ramsey, NJ USA - November 13, 2002 at 13:52:41 Fellow Panthers -- I feel it would be a great gesture if you would be able keep those Panthers who are not yet on the internet, and with whom you are in contact, informed of the happenings in re to the Parade so they may also have the opportunity to represent PMA in March. Let's get a turnout befitting of the old Alma Mater. -- Vic '52 Vic Kaplan '52 <vickap13@optonline.net> Garden City Park, NY USA - November 13, 2002 at 11:40:03 Terry: You can count on this '71 grad to march on St.Patty's Day; let's hear from other '71 classmates! Fernando Hernandez <fernpa@hotmail.com> Miami, Fl USA - November 13, 2002 at 09:07:17 We are looking for about 8 good men from each of the following classes: 1950, 1953, 1955, 1958, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1984. Terry McAdams <powermemorial@aol.com> Bay Shore, NY USA - November 12, 2002 at 19:30:52 Br. D'Adamo, Will you be able to march with us On St. Patrick's Day? You must, someone must keep these boys "in line". And to the alumni: We need at least 300 of us to march - we got to show New York that although Power Memorial Academy no longer exists, it still exists in our hearts! Steve Henits <zank@comcast.net> NJ USA - November 12, 2002 at 17:57:41 As of today, 53 Power Alumni have signed up for the St. Patrick's Parade. So far, it's a tie with the classes of '69 and '75 each having six Purple and Gold marchers. The number also includes a member of the first graduating class (1935), Robert Shearn, and 3 of our lost Power Brothers from the class of '85, which never had the opportunity to graduate due to the school's closing. Old band members are indeed welcome! Terry McAdams <powermemorial@aol.com> Bay Shore, NY USA - November 11, 2002 at 22:43:32 Suprise 50th Birthday party coming in March 2003 for Richard Dougherty...I beleive he was the class of 71? I would love for some old friends to come share this day with him that he has not seen in years!!!!!! Email me please! Kileen <MomToKristin@msn.com> MA USA - November 11, 2002 at 20:50:22 Hi to the men from the classes 1962 to 1968. Back in the US for longer periods of time - next evaluation trip to Boys Towns in Rome, Italy is the end of December. Meanwhile most of my days are spent in New Rochelle, communting to various Boys Towns of Italy events throughout the US. Glad I found the PMA connection again. Bro. A.E. D'Adamo, C.F.C. <dadamo@atgnet.com> New Rochelle, NY USA - November 11, 2002 at 16:05:28 Hi Guys, I recieved this e-mail and wonder if anyone can help. My name is Judith Evans, and I'm a reporter at the Washington Post. I'm trying to locate Jack Donahue, the former boys basketball coach at Power Memorial in reference to a story that I'm working on about the retirement of DeMatha Coach Joe Wootten. If you have any idea of how i can reach Donahue, I would greatly appreciate it. thanks, Judith Evans. Jose B. Rivera <jose@powermemorialacademy.com> New York, NY USA - November 10, 2002 at 16:09:57 Some time ago my daughter had a few of her college classmates over at our home. One of the young men introduced himself as Jose Paredes; this immediately send my few remaining brain cells into motion because I recalled a Power '71 classmate by the name of Jesus Paredes. After a brief conversation, he said his dad attended high school in NY but he didn't know where. To make a long story short, he was the son of Jesus, isn't that amazing? Jesus and I get together for lunch every month now and we have a ball recalling our days at Power. I'm glad to be able to renew a friendship after 31 years. Fernando Hernandez <fernpa@hotmail.com> Miami, Fl USA - November 09, 2002 at 19:39:49 Sorry but missed the latest reunion. Met many other "Power Men" in recent weeks that are protecting many in NYC boundaries. This site is wonderful and brings back many Great Memories including taking the "A" Train home to Queens. Feel free to write as I will visit often and get others to become aware of this site. "P & G 4Ever" Bob Rogers (aka "The Weed") <34sports@optonline.net> New Hyde Park, NY USA - November 07, 2002 at 15:21:16 Great turnout for the reunion! Our appreciation to Mr. Coppolino for making it all possible. We had a lot of laughs & swapped a lot of stories. Especially, a lot of Kelly stories. Maybe, he'll come next year to verify the truth to some of them?! Best regards to all for the holidays, John John O. New York,, NY USA - November 06, 2002 at 06:43:25 Terry, I pulled out the sash & it is in great shape. I'll check on this side of the Hudson to see about reproducing them & at what cost. I also found a sheet of Power decals, some bookcovers and a bunch of other great stuff. Chick Andrew "Chick" Pisani <chick174@bellatlantic.net> Union City, NJ USA - November 05, 2002 at 01:55:53 Chick, If that sash is not in tatters can we borrow it to use as a model for our Power march? Terry McAdams <tmca123@aol.com> Bay Shore, NY USA - November 04, 2002 at 07:46:21 Hi Guys, It's been a while since I logged on and I am glad to see the site is stronger than ever. I'm sorry I was unable to attend the reunion in October, but I intend to make next year's reunion. I am definitely going to participate in the St Patrick's Day Parade. It should be like old times again. I went digging through some old boxes & found a lot of Power memorabilia. One of my prized possession is the sash worn by the senior class as they marched behind the band. I had to help Bro Coakley collect them, so I decided to keep one. Chick Andrew "Chick" Pisani <chick174@bellatlantic.net> Union City, NJ USA - November 04, 2002 at 02:54:28 We have set up a mail drop for alumni to sign up for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. This should simplify sending information to everyone. Please send your name, year of graduation, and e-mail address to powermemorial@aol.com. Terry McAdams <powermemorial@aol.com> Bayshore, NY USA - November 02, 2002 at 08:28:31 Terry, Thanks for the help, but if I give it a good hour or so, I should be able to untangle the maze. Just need an easy Sunday morning! I think is should be simplified for the good of all. ---- Julio, Your from '68 too! Seems the 1968 class never took a computer course ;-) John Vint, our classmate, perhaps you remember him, was involved with the first developers of the internet. I'd wish he'd come on here and help his fellow classmates! Steve Henits <zank@comcast.net> New Jersey, USA - November 01, 2002 at 22:34:54 Steve - check your e-mail address. E-mails to you come back with an error message. Vic Kaplan and I were trying to help you with the discussion forum. Terry McAdams <tmca123@aol.com> Bayshore, NY USA - October 31, 2002 at 16:42:36 I was at the 2002 reunion. It never ceases to amaze me that the spirit of the school is being kept alive by so many. I guess it's because PMA has had such a positive on so many who passed through. Paul Leone <angelo.leone@verizon.net> East Meadow, NY USA - October 30, 2002 at 23:51:18 Can anybody help me? I have never worked with Discussion Boards before and when I tried to negotiate my way on the St. Patrick's Day "Board" I kinda sorta said "Duh" and left it alone. I still want to march my flat Size 15 feet on St. Patrick's Day. Since I'd don't live in the Big Apple anymore, all I need to know is time -- place -- dress code -- code of ethics. If there are PMA caps, jackets, buttons, whatever -- I'd like to find out about it. I said this once before -- if we have a good turnout -- maybe we can create some sort of buzz for resurrecting a new "Power Memorial Academy". We alums are not getting any younger and we have had to said "Good-Bye" to too many Powermen lately. Does anybody who took Latin remember the words to the song that begins with the words: "Gaudiamus Igitur"? Nobody? Anyway -- all hail to Alma Mater. Julio J. Lastra <jlastra@bellatlantic.net> Philadelphia, PA USA - October 30, 2002 at 21:50:29 Steve, I guess most of us who have been using the discussion forum have become so used to the system it has become second nature to us. We are open to suggestions on how to simplify this parade sign-up and perhaps Jose can help us out. Keep the faith. Sorry for the frustration. Terry McAdams <tmca123@aol.com> Bayshore, NY USA - October 26, 2002 at 12:27:22 OK, now I got it! First we must sign in everytime we want to post. How come I can't get into the Discussion about St. Pat's Day Parade, filled out all the info, and nothing. Just want to know where do we meet to march and time and any other details. Great idea for the march! Stephen Henits <zank@comcast.com> Fords, NJ USA - October 25, 2002 at 16:47:24 Thanks for the site! Howrver, too cocmplicated; to many sign-ins. Stephen Henits <zank@comcast.net> Fords, NJ USA - October 25, 2002 at 16:42:39 Dear Power Memorial, Wow! I did not even dream that there would be a website for the greatest high school ever.Last night I was cleaning out the attic and came across my yearbooks. My oldest daughter wanted to see them and it brought back great memories - sports, friends, the best gym in the world. A different time. How is Brother Jensen? Br. Grogan? Mr Grasso? Hope all are well. Best to all Power Alumni. Sal Tofano, s.tofano@worldnet.att.net Sal Tofano <s.tofano@worldnet.att.net> Stamford, CT USA - October 25, 2002 at 12:04:26 No collections are needed but the Power caps are an interesting idea. We will probably want to hold a meeting so if you are interested please go to the "Discussion" link to your left then sign in on the St. Patrick's Day Parade so we can have some idea who will be marching. Terry McAdams <tmca123@aol.com> NY USA - October 23, 2002 at 18:16:41 Great to hear about the St. Patrick's Day Parade! Will a collection be needed for a new banner? Should we all wear Power caps? If I can get time off from work to march, I'd love to be there. Roberto Monteagudo <RMontea4@aol.com> USA - October 23, 2002 at 11:15:42 We have permission to march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade as the Power Memorial Academy Alumni contingent. Please keep in touch via the "Discussion" link to your left then scroll down to St. Patrick's Day Parade. Let's have a good turnout for this memorable event. Terry McAdams <tmca123@aol.com> Bay Shore, NY USA - October 22, 2002 at 19:01:57 Also went to my first reunion this past friday and had an unforgettable evening. Just sent me back in time seeing my buds John Molinari, Phil Reda, Richie Low, Fernandez, Ujvary, ELBERT Hammond; everyone from that 1965 thru 1969 madhouse. The memories came flooding back into my brain and I realized what great times we had through those growing years. I can't see myself missing another reunion and I hope we can round up more guys from 1969. So if your reading this Frankie Roman, John Ehrman, Luis Caron, Gene Manna - this is a great time. Thanks big time to Rich Coppolino for making this possible, hope your feeling better, I'll make sure I find you in the crowd next year to thank you personally. By the time we are done we're gonna need to book the Meadowlands! larry driscoll <larosity@yahoo.com> somers, NY USA - October 21, 2002 at 00:45:40 Attended my first reunion 10/18/02 and it was great. Many from 1969 and 1971 were there. Hope next year's is even bigger. Several suggestions came up: 1) How about some band members playing. 2) The basketball hall of fame does not do our school justice. A contingent is needed to bring more memorabilia there and set the record straight. Power is listed like an ordinary school who had a basketball team and not the champs that they were. He graduated from PMA in 1967. I regret to inform all of the wonderful friends Bill talked of, that he passed away on July 30, 2002. Whenever he spoke of PMA and the friends he and his twin brother (Tom, passed away 3/8/98) had there, it was always with great love and affection for a very meaningful time of his life. Thank you for allowing me to share my husbands feelings for his almamater with all of you. Donna Burke <heart2drect@yahoo.com> Santa Ana, CA USA - August 11, 2002 at 15:57:19 I found a class type ring that has engraving -- C.H. Little, Class of 75, PMA. Kathy Matthews <fjewelbox@aol.com> IN USA - August 10, 2002 at 13:30:34 Al, I attended Blessed Sacrament School of Manhattan on 70th street right off Broadway for eight years, but graduated from there in 1975, a bit later than your period. A great building block of a school, I must say, for a student entering the mighty Power Memorial Academy. Michael B. Galaburri USA - August 08, 2002 at 23:12:58 Hello out there! I would like to know if there are any Power grads who also attended Blessed Sacramenat Grammar School in the 1950's. The school was located on West 70th Street, a few blocks away. I graduated there in 1961 and some of my classmates then went on to Power. I was just browsing the site hoping that maybe there was a picture of him from high school or something. My dad died in 1995 at the age of 42, and if there's anyone who reads this who knew my dad or was friends with him or something, please contact me, I'm looking to find out what he was like when he was about my age. Thanx, and keep up the good work on this site. Greta Neidhardt <hartbreaka226@cs.com> Beachwood, NJ USA - July 25, 2002 at 01:31:28 Looking for 1973 Alumi Alkyndar Cruz. Frank <fg1313@yahoo.com> New York, NY USA - July 22, 2002 at 22:57:15 During my years at PMA '56 to '60 the cafeteria was run by Sonny who with his family owned Errico's Deli. I believe his brother Danny ran the store and Ed Marinaro was a cousin who worked there as a kid. Through this site I have heard from several of my class mates and truely enjoy it. I talk to Kareem once in a while and I know he has seen several PMA guys over the years. By the way some of you may know that Frank Gannon '60 was a special asst to Pres. Steve Kirk <Skirk46341@aol.com> Phoenix, Az USA - June 30, 2002 at 19:49:20 Hi Fernando, You are right about Ed Marinaro. John Mattice told me that Ed Marinaro worked at the sandwich shop. This past week, I was teaching with John & when I told him you remembered his father's shop, he became excited over the fact that we still remember the little things about Power's neighborhood. I have to get John to tell me again how Ed Marinaro was connected to the sandwich shop. Chick, PMA '70 Andrew "Chick" Pisani <chick174@bellatlantic.net> Union City, NJ USA - June 29, 2002 at 21:09:07 Fernando, Thanks for the kind words. The kids definitely keep me on my toes. Just wish I was 20 years younger, but don't we all? Still remember those windy walks from 57th and 7th? Do not miss them at all. Mike Hanvey <mhanvey@sbcglobal.net> Valencia, CA USA - June 28, 2002 at 00:30:32 Chris -- Without your efforts, there would never have been so many successful PMA sites. Every Panther owes you a great debt of gratitude for restoring the old Alma Mater to its deserved glory. You persisted through the lean days and months after startup and it all paid off. You can take pride in the fact that the reunion has grown every year thanks to your bringing it to everyone's attention. Thank you for everything Chris. We hope to see you on the discussion pages one day. -- Vic Kaplan '52 Vic Kaplan <vickap13@optonline.net> Garden City Park, NY USA - June 27, 2002 at 14:30:14 Chris, many thanks for a job well done. Novack Chris Novack <cjnovack@yahoo.com> Rockville, MD USA - June 26, 2002 at 20:53:02 I am closing the page on the original PMA web-site at http://powermemorialacademy.8m.com.Back in the Internet old days, there was nothing about Power anywhere on the web. Classmates.com had maybe 15 members? Now there are ove 700!! Anyhow, Jose has taken the ball and run with it, providing a finer site than I ever expected to achieve. And Jack Cunningham, in addition to his Veteran endeavors, has the PMA forum up and running. The raisson d'etre of the original site subject to a free ISP's rules and regs (like a cyber-Bro. Boyle)seems quaint by comparison. I will be modifying the site shortly, leaving only a link to this page and a tribute to our fellow PMA alumni who perished in the 9/11 attack. While the page hadnt "fleshed out" the 2 closest people who I grew up and attended PMA with, it has given me, and the rest of the alumni, a starting point. Thanks, to ESPECIALLY VIC KAPLAN, for all of the efforts in getting me and the PMA Internet started. And if I cheesed anyone off along the way, so it goes... See you back in the forum shortly! Novack Chris Novack <cjnovack@yahoo.com> Rockville, MD USA - June 26, 2002 at 20:49:52 Mike Hanvey: Congrats on #3 child, may he/she be a blessing to you. He would have possible been in the class of 51 or 52. Any information is very much welcome. Carie M. Fiorito <cmfchicago@aol.com> Chicago, IL USA - June 25, 2002 at 23:43:30 Hi Power People: I grew up on Amsterdam Avenue between 60/61st and attended St. Paul's Grammar School back in the 50's. My family moved to NJ in '57, but other relatives remained on Amsterdam until the early 60's. We all sure remember Power. Anybody out there remember Rocco's deli or Al & Ben's candy store on Amsterdam? This is such a great site, I remember the Power building and it's fabulous to see photos of it. I see some of you went to St. Paul's as well - all of my family went there - surnames were Trani, Campanile, Monti, Ferraro and Lamon. All Power to Power! Maureen O'Donnell London, England, UK - June 25, 2002 at 13:37:11 Chick: I remember buying sandwiches at a shop in the summer time where a big, muscular guy was behind the counter. As it turned out, it was Ed Marinaro the fullback from I believe Cornell who later played pro football and went into the acting business. Anyone else remember seeing Marinaro there? Fernando Hernandez <fernpa@hotmail.com> Miami, Fl USA - June 24, 2002 at 08:29:14 Hey Guys, Here is a bit of Power trivia. Do any of you remember John's Sandwich Shop on 60th St between 10th & 11th Ave? It was down the block from Errico's, across from the pool. The reason I'm bringing this up is because of a strange twist of fate. Recently, I have been instructing vehicle operations (tactical driving) at the Port Authority Police Academy & met a Port Authority Police Officer & fellow instructor, named John Mattiace. He is teaching with me & other instructors from other NJ police departments. This past week, John & I were talking about our pasts & what schools we attended. When I told him I went to Power, he asked me if I knew about John's Sandwich Shop. Of course, I replied that I had eaten there many times. He then told me his father owned the place & that he worked there with his father & mother. Talk about a small world. He must have served me at the counter many times over. I remember several young people working behind the counter. He was one of them. I told John that his family's sandwich shop was a favorite place for the bandmembers when we had parade practice on Saturdays. Errico's was also a favored place to get lunch. Both places were a relief from those infamous burgers in the school cafeteria served to us by Aggie. John told me his parents still talk about Power & how they remember serving Lewis (Kareem). If any of you remember John's Sandwich Shop & have some trivia about being there, log it into this guestbook or Email me with your story so I can pass it along to John. He would love to hear about it. Chick Andrew "Chick" Pisani <chick174@bellatlantic.net> Union City, NJ USA - June 24, 2002 at 01:34:18 Whoops - that was not the Len Elmore team, it was after Alcindor left - sorry. Steve Henits <zank@comcast.net> USA - June 19, 2002 at 22:28:46 John Godzich, Good to hear from you again. Tonetti is on Long Island. I still recall your dejection at Fordham when we lost the championship; that was the Len Elmore team. Hope life has been treating you well! On a footnote, I still cannot believe that no one has copied that Power Metro TV to share! Steve Henits <zank@comcast.net> NJ USA - June 19, 2002 at 22:19:18 Our Power Memorial yahoo-group has hit 40 members today. Please join. Jack (John) Cunningham <ProudVietnamVeteran@earthlink.> Sussex, NJ USA - June 17, 2002 at 18:00:02 Great website!!! I had given up on knowing what happened to Power... Everytime I would go back to New York, I would visit the "hallowed grounds", hoping to find out something about when the school was closed. It was great to find out that there are alumni reunions. Keep me posted. Would really enjoy getting to the next one. Again, congratulations on a great website. Fernando Hernandez <fernpa@hotmail.com> Miami, Fl USA - June 15, 2002 at 14:43:08 We need to prove that our Dad attended Power between 1942-45. Since we do not have the records to prove this (his records were lost), we started looking for yearbooks and have come up with those of 1944 and 1945. We still need to prove he attended Power during 1942 and 1943. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to where we could obtain copies of those yearbooks? Thanks for your help. Regarding marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade, this is one old band member (1949-1951) who is in favor of the idea. I'll even carry my old clarinet but don't ask me to play it. I WOULD LOVE IT, ANYONE ELSE? GENE "75" EUGENE COLLINS <ARLO516@AOL.COM> USA - May 23, 2002 at 20:48:47 Julio...I like the ideas !!!...I say we do IT !! Hey What the heck, worst that can happen is we all have some fun and laughs and have another story to tell in years to come. How great will that be that after 20 years people still know we are around. vinny USA - May 20, 2002 at 22:42:05 This is for John H. Ihle. One crazy idea deserves another. But first -- your crazy idea. Assuming that aging band members still have the foot stamina to start and finish the enitre stretch of the parade route, the Columbus Day Parade might be the easiest to organize -- but the St. Patrick's Day Parade is the one that would be the more meaningful. PMA was an Irish Christian Brothers School and made its annual school-wide statement on St. Patrick's Day. Now -- for my crazy (maybe even crazier, and probably unrealistic) idea -- what if PMA's proud (albeit, aging and graying), alums marched right behind the band on St. Patrick's Day? Are we locked into holding the annual PMA Alumni Reunion (i.e., the NYC Reunion) in October instead of another time in the year? Now for an absolutely demented idea -- if PMA types got a 3 - 5 second media mention during the TV coverage of the parade, is there any "connect" to the idea of resurrecting a new PMA? Julio J. Lastra USA - May 18, 2002 at 11:50:56 I agree with David Gautier. The band should get together. I even had a crazy idea that we should organize a band and march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade-------Like old times! Or maybe the Columbus Day Parade. That would be around the same time that the reunions have been. Anybody agree with me? Sorry to hear that Brother "Jack" McPartland died. I probably worked harder at my typing skills my senior year than any other subject. Anybody ever hear about: George Ligotti, Jay Lance, both class of '62; or how about Brother Lawrence Murphy or Mike McGill, class of '63 and both from St. Pancras School in Glendale, my home town? John H. Ihle <ambrose@machlink.com> Muscatine, IA USA - May 13, 2002 at 18:12:01 Truly enjoy coming back to the site from time to time to catch up on the news. Still live in Queens and still work in "Hell's Kitchen" I thought 25 years with the P.D. would have taught me! Anyone looking to talk feel free to call. Will look for reunion updates. Stay Well!! Great Site!! George A. McMonigle <blueliner3@aol.com> Same, NY USA - March 26, 2002 at 10:27:14 2nd Response: to Fernando Hernandez Christopher J. Mangan <Nikon2Hasselblad2Cars@Yahoo> LIC, NY USA - March 21, 2002 at 18:37:52 I'm responding to one of the e-mails (copied below). Yes, this was the site of St. Paul the Apostle school. The address was 124 West 60th Street. I know because I went to school there and my father, John Mangan, worked there also. The convent is still there, however. =================================== The MacCauley Caulkin building where that fire occurred is not located on the former Power site on W.61st Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The fire building is located a block away on the south side of W.60th Street between Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue. I am not sure but I believe it is on the site of the former St. Paul's grammer school or on land that had belonged to St. Paul's. Kevin McGeary USA - February 09, 2002 at 22:15:54 Christopher J. I hope everything works out for him! Eddie Eddie USA - March 10, 2002 at 23:38:32 Bill Victory's testimony of his last day at Power 51 years ago was touching. Just today I told my son that the basketball commentator on the college game we were watching was Lenny Elmore, he didn't really understand the pride and memories Lenny brought me, but I'm sure all my PMA brothers understand... Fernando Hernandez <fernpa@hotmail.com> Miami, Fl USA - March 09, 2002 at 18:06:57 i remember we had the graduation in hunter college auditorium, and then had to take all the regents. after finishing the last test, i left alone, walked down the ramp (this was before the gym, which i never saw), out through that marvelous old gate that looked like something out of kremlin, out onto 61st street, took one look back, and that was the end of my p.m.a. days. only 51 years ago. bill victory <v1ctory@bellatlantic.net> new monmouth, nj USA - March 09, 2002 at 16:57:38 Hi Guys, I caught the last half of the tribute to Kareem Abdul and it brought back some wonderful memories, especially the Panthers team of 1970. Lenny Elmore, Japeth Trimble, Ed Searcy, Bobby Toner, Steve Donohue & the rest of the team made us proud. I remember driving down to Washington D.C. to see the team play. Three carloads of screwball bandmembers & booster club members invaded the place. Pete Velez, Gene Ponsini & I had the cars. Isiah "Mickey" White, Vinnie DiDio, Tim O'Brien, Mike Cullinane, Ed Litke & Dennis Zack ('69) were participants of that trip. The trip was so eventful with mishaps & zany behavior that Pete, Tim and I still talk about it, among some of the other stunts we pulled in the band. To all of the class of 1970, my classmates, especially the band members; I think of you guys often. Stay in touch. Chick Andrew "Chick" Pisani <chick174@bellatlantic.net> Union City, NJ USA - March 08, 2002 at 00:40:09 Nice site, guys. My brother, Francisco Juan Cortes, told me about this site. Buddy none, none USA - February 22, 2002 at 17:43:55 Just read that Kareem got hired as Coach of the Oklahoma USBL team. FINALLY, he gets an opportunity to coach. A real shame he paid so long for what appears to have been his "only want to play" attitude which carried over big time in his post playing career. Good Luck Man. Walt Mugavin <walt47@att.net> Brewster, NY USA - February 21, 2002 at 15:23:01 Well I just finish watching the documentry on Kareem and Power, I tell you this...as power touched us, it also touched the lives of all New Yorkers. We should be honored that we attended that school and by what I see on this web site....WE ARE !!! It's about 30 miles from Washington DC. Maybe some former Power Memorial students would like to show Brother D'Adamo some support. He has attended the event the first two years it was held in Reston. It would be a great opportunity to meet him again. (He still likes exactly the smae, but with only a full head of gray hair.) Dan Diffley <Diff6@aol.com> USA - February 12, 2002 at 09:32:56 Sadly, I came across this in the Bergen Record this morning: Bro. John P. McPartland, who taught at Power in the '60s, died Monday, 2/11, after a long battle with cancer. He was 69. Bro. McPartland ( I bet he still had the crew cut!) also taught at Bergen Catholic in Oradell, NJ and was a volunteer at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ. Hiw wake will be held at the Volk-Leber Funeral Home, 268 Kinderkamack Road, Oradell, (201-261-1088) on Wednesday, from 2-4 and 7-9. His funeral is on Thursday at St. Joseph's Church, Oradell, at 9AM.
